New Zealand has reported its first case of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in a seabird, following earlier warnings from the biosecurity minister that the virus could arrive at any time. The country had been preparing for its arrival with biosecurity plans.

New Zealand's Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard stated the country is well-prepared to respond if bird flu reaches its shores, urging public readiness.
