Italian prison overcrowding at 139% says inmates association Antigone

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 19 - The overcrowding rate of Italy's prisons stood at 139.1% on April 30, 2026, according to the annual report of inmates rights association Antigone. The report said Italy's prison population numbered 64,436 at the end of last month and, while the overall capacity of the nation's jails is 51,265 in theory, in practice the number of places actually available is 46,318.
