IEA's release of 400 million barrels is unprecedented, but its effectiveness is debated

The International Energy Agency announced on Wednesday that it would release emergency oil reserves in an effort to soften the blow of supply disruptions in the Middle East, following the Israeli-American offensive against Iran. Yet by Thursday morning, Brent crude prices had surged back above $100 a barrel.
