Ask The Doctor: I am considering getting the coil instead of the pill but I've heard horror stories. How bad is it?

Question: I’m considering getting the coil instead of going back on the pill. I like the idea of something long-term, but I’ve heard horror stories about very painful insertion, heavy bleeding, mood changes and even the coil moving. How common are these problems in reality? Is it as bad as people say, and how do I know whether the hormonal or copper coil would suit me better?
