E-passport tender cancelled with immediate effect. The Department of Immigration and Emigration has cancelled the tender for the issuance of e-passports with immediate effect. The decision was taken following a request by the Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral (Retired) Sarath Weerasekera. The tender was awarded to a foreign company last week. However, the Minister stated that the tender process was not transparent and that the selected company did not have the necessary experience to provide the service. He also stated that the cost of the e-passports would be higher than expected. The Department of Immigration and Emigration has decided to re-tender the project. The new tender is expected to be issued within the next two weeks.
