Italy must compensate Sea Watch €76,000 for unlawful arrest
(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 18 - A Palermo court on Wednesday ruled that migrant rescue NGO Sea Watch must be compensated by the state to the tune of over €76,000 for the unlawful arrest of the Sea Watch 3 ship in June 2019.
The incident relates to the case involving the then-captain of the ship, Carola Rackete, who on June 29 of that year forced the naval blockade of Lampedusa to disembark 42 migrants on the island.
Now the state will have to reimburse the documented expenses incurred between October and December 2019, including port and agency fees, fuel to keep the ship active, and legal fees.
