606 Migrants Dead or Missing in Mediterranean in Early 2026, Deadliest Start Since 2014
The International Organization for Migration reports that 606 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean since the start of 2026, making it the deadliest beginning of a year since 2014, following a shipwreck off Crete where at least 30 people are presumed dead or missing.
