Jedná se o staré, duté nebo poškozené stromy, které umožňují život dalším živočichům, hlavně houbám a ptákům. Jsou proto velmi důležité pro zachování biologické rozmanitosti v přírodě. Zhruba stovku vytipovaných stromů lesníci ušetří těžby a nechají je stát.
