1960 - Cipru, colonie britanică în acel moment, a devenit o republică independentă. Arhiepiscopul Makarios al III-lea a devenit primul președinte. După doar trei ani de independență, au izbucnit violențe între greci și turci. Insula a fost divizată pe criterii etnice, deși informal, Cipru este membră a UE din 2004.
