A church in Sunākste, Latvia, has been renamed in honor of the 18th-century Baltic German linguist and writer Gotthard Friedrich Stender, a move that has reportedly caused dissatisfaction among some members of the local community.

Vācbaltieties Gotthards Frīdrihs Stenders jeb Vecais Stenders 18. gadsimtā atstājis nozīmīgu ieguldījumu latviešu valodā, literatūrā un kultūrā. Viņš savulaik kalpoja arī par mācītāju Sunākstē. Lai godinātu viņa devumu, vietējā draudze dievnamam devusi Stendera vārdu. Tomēr daļa iedzīvotāju nav apmierināti, jo tagad pazudis Sunākstes vārds, bet pašam Stenderam ar baznīcu nav tiešas saistības.
