Bath toys and science: Rubber ducks in scientific thought

Picture a rubber ducky peacefully floating in a pool or a bathtub. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Bath time? Childhood memories? Pretty much anything but using it in science. But, somewhere, someone took one look at this cutie and said, “This would be a great subject for research.”
