Houston Community Raises $2.8 Million to Save Historic Garden Oaks Theater

In 1947, Houston opened a 700-seat Art Deco theater; 79 years later, $2.8M was raised to save it

Houston's historic Garden Oaks Theater faced demolition after its sale in 2025. A local preservation campaign successfully raised funds to acquire the property. The nonprofit Arthouse Houston plans to transform the building into an arts and film center. This new center will combine historic preservation with new cultural uses. The completed center is targeted for a grand opening in 2028.
