Robert Fico bol historicky asi najväčším odporcom zvyšovania DPH. Keď ju musela v roku 2010 po prvej vláde Smeru zvýšiť Radičovej vláda, hovoril o ožobračovaní ľudí. O dva roky bol späť pri moci a DPH nechal takú, akú ju schválila Radičovej kabinet.
