A jednak 26 czerwca 1953 r. grupa oficerów przemyciła do gmachu pistolety i dwa pistolety maszynowe, by aresztować najpotężniejszego po Stalinie człowieka w państwie. Ławrientij Beria, szef radzieckiego aparatu terroru, wszedł tego dnia na posiedzenie w doskonałym humorze. Nie wiedział, że to pułapka.
